Three years ago I wrote an article on the health benefits of bee propolis. Since then new information continues to be published establishing the anti-cancer properties of this glue-like substance collected by the worker bees to seal and protect the beehive. If you perform a search on PubMed for studies on propolis itself or propolis and cancer you will find hundreds of studies which simply means the stuff works.
Propolis has been used for thousands of years by various cultures for various medicinal purposes. Propolis is said to have significant anti-microbial action, heal burns, prevent dental cavities, treat parasites, remove warts, treat herpes symptoms (performed better than a popular drug) and for its anti-cancer properties. Studies show propolis has shown efficacy against brain, head, and neck, skin, breast, liver, pancreas, kidney, prostate, colon and blood cancers. Pretty impressive! Propolis can also induce apoptosis (cell suicide), prevent metastasis, cause cell cycle arrest (prevents cells from multiplying and even moderate side effects from chemotherapy. In one study it was found that propolis targets cancer stem cells which means it has the potential of preventing cancer cells to spread or metastasize. Chemo and radiation CANNOT kill cancer stem cells.
