The Benefits of Vitamin B-1

b1

Virtually nobody talks about thiamine, also known as vitamin B-1.  Many know about Folic acid, or Biotin or pantothenic acid.  The risk for developing thiamine deficiency in the US is generally low, but there is a higher risk in certain groups of people.  Alcohol dependence, the elderly, AIDS, chronically elevated blood sugar levels, eating disorders, weight loss surgery, on dialysis, and a high dose of diuretics.  Pregnant and breastfeeding women may have a higher risk for thiamine deficiency.  Infants who are exclusively breastfed by thiamine-deficient mothers are at a higher risk too.

Laboratory testing to confirm thiamine deficiency is considered to be unreliable for both urine tests and blood tests.

Symptoms of vitamin B-1 deficiency are loss of appetite, fatigue, irritability, nerve damage, tingling arms and legs, blurry vision, delirium, and nausea and vomiting.  Severe deficiency can result in confusion, hallucinations, and memory loss.  Ideally, the best approach to thiamine deficiency is prevention.  Eating a diet rich in thiamine-containing foods can help maintain adequate thiamine levels in the body.  Common foods that are sources of dietary thiamine include:  black beans, macadamia nuts, plain yogurt, sunflower seeds, lentils, and whole grain bread.  Also, a thiamine-containing supplement, such as a multivitamin or vitamin B complex will provide the recommended daily needs for thiamine.  Taking a vitamin B-1 supplement is an inexpensive option but remember, in order to avoid an imbalance in the other B vitamins it is best to take a B-1 supplement with a B complex or multivitamin that has the other B vitamins.  You are safe to take B-1 by itself for several weeks but include a multivitamin or B complex for longer intake of B-1.  The B vitamins are water soluble which means they are not stored in the body and need to be replaced on a regular basis.

Please consult with a Natural Living associate to select a vitamin B-1, or a B complex or multivitamin that is appropriate for you.  We have in stock B-1 in 100mg and 150mg doses.
