It is watermelon season in Indiana and the juicy, refreshing taste of a watermelon is enjoyed by many. At Georgetown Market, we are proud to provide locally grown watermelon with seeds, red or yellow. By the time you read this, the season will be winding down.
In years past, there was a watermelon season, but now you can buy watermelon year-round. How do you know the quality of the watermelon you are buying? After investigating, it turns out dangerous chemicals are often injected into watermelon to enhance the color.
Some are injected with Erythrosine-B, a red dye. Artificial dyes such as lead chromate, or methanol red/yellow to give the melon an excellent color.
How do you tell if an artificial dye has been used? An easy way is to cut the watermelon open and dab a cotton ball on the pulp. If the cotton ball turns red, the watermelon has most likely been injected with a dye.
If you don’t have a cotton ball handy, use toilet paper or tissue paper. Also, look for any small holes on the outside of the watermelon where it might be injected. I did the test at home on the watermelon I purchased from our Amish grower and there was no trace of any red on the cotton ball. Safe!
Do you know the health benefits of eating fresh watermelon? It is very hydrating because of the high-water content, around 90%. It is low in calories, high in potassium and vitamin A, rich in antioxidants such as lycopene, contains citrulline, an amino acid that promotes the production of nitric oxide and supports cardiovascular health and exercise performance.
Watermelon contains beta-carotene which supports healthy eyesight and protects the cornea. The fiber in watermelon, both soluble and insoluble, aids digestive health. Watermelon contains electrolytes that are vital for proper muscle function and recovery.
Studies have indicated that the lycopene found in watermelon has a significant effect on the growth of cancer cells, especially prostate and cervical cancer.
