It is the time of year to be mindful of poison ivy. Eighty-five percent of all people are sensitive to the plant. If you are exposed to poison ivy, it is recommended to immediately wash the area with soapy water. Urushiol oil is the active component in the plant that causes the rash and can remain active on surfaces such as clothing, bed sheets, gloves, and tools.

It is important to wash around your fingers and fingernails to remove the urushiol oil that can spread by scratching your skin. Poison ivy rashes can last one to three weeks. The oil can remain active on surfaces for years unless cleaned properly.

To address the itching, try the homeopathic remedy antimonium crud, or the essential oil lavender or Young Living joy essential oil. Jewelweed salve can reduce itching. Aloe vera gel may also reduce itching and support skin healing. Mixing 3 parts of baking soda with one part water to make a paste can dry out blisters and reduce itching.

Equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water applied with a cotton ball may also reduce itching and dry out blisters. To reduce inflammation and promote healing, try a cold compress by soaking a clean cloth in cold water and apply it to the rash for 15-30 minutes several times a day. Tea tree oil and lavender oil have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits. Consider diluting essential oils with a carrier oil before applying to the skin.

Quercetin, vitamin C, and stinging nettle are all supportive of healing along with their anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine properties. The ideal way to obtain all three ingredients is the supplement D-Hist by Ortho Molecular Products. D-Hist is also great for seasonal allergies.

The homeopathic remedy rhus tox is derived from the poison ivy plant itself. Homeopathic medicine operates on the principle of “like cures like.” Rhus tox addresses the itching, redness and inflammation of the rash. Try the 30c potency, taking 4 pellets orally, two to three times per day. Take all homeopathic remedies at least 20 minutes away from food, caffeine, garlic, and mint.

Please avoid direct sunlight and hot water on the rash. Avoid itching.
