Methylene blue, a synthetic textile dye, was created in the 1870’s. A Berlin scientist quickly discovered that MB was beneficial in treating malaria. MB is the parent compound of hydroxychloroquine which was found to be effective in treating a famous coronavirus.
Here are five notable benefits of methylene blue:
- Boosts mitochondrial function and energy production. The mitochondria are the “energy factories” of our cells that the body uses for energy. Chronic fatigue may be improved with MB. Mitochondria are related to longevity.
- Neuroprotective properties. As a neuroprotective, it has been scientifically proven to protect and restore/reset brain function. Diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson may improve with taking MB.
- Antidepressant effects. Because MB is an MAO inhibitor, it may help with depression, bipolar issues, and enhance mood and memory. Brain fog may be alleviated.
- Antimicrobial activity. MB may be effective as an anti-fungal especially against candida and other funguses. When combined with sunlight or red light therapy, MB is potentially effective against bacteria such as staph. Consider MB when treating urinary infections.
- Antiaging and skin protection. Some experts consider MB to be elite for skin health. Oxidative stress (similar to rusting) results in decreased collagen synthesis and increased collagen breakdown. MB counteracts oxidative stress. It promotes wound healing and absorbs UV rays which can damage skin. It can slow skin aging.
Did you know that virtually every emergency room keeps MB on hand as an antidote for cyanide and carbon monoxide poisoning? Some physicians use MB for cardiovascular support. To enhance the results of taking MB, stack it with other nutrients such as vitamin C, CoQ10, black seed oil, magnesium, NAC or bromelain. To improve immune support, take MB with zinc, elderberry, cordyceps or garlic.
It is important to choose a pharmaceutical grade MB which is what Georgetown offers, either in liquid or powder form. A low dose of 3mg to 5mg, 3 to 5 days a week. I personally use the liquid form and add drops to clean water and drink it with a straw to avoid the blue tongue/lips. Be aware that MB will turn urine blue. Stop taking it if you are allergic to it (rare), or avoid if you are on SSRI medications.
