You have heard of the popular statin drugs such as Lipitor, Crestor, Vytorin or Simvastatin. These are cholesterol-lowering drugs and according to Dr Sherry Rogers these statins will “go down in the history of medicine as probably the worst mistake that has ever been made”. They create havoc in the body by various mechanisms. They create body aches that resemble a flu, arthritis, and old age. Statins also lower many nutrients such as vitamin E, EPA, DHA, and selenium. Statins work by poisoning the cholesterol that your liver makes every day to replace old cells. But the worse side effect according to Dr. Sherry Rogers is statins cause sudden amnesia.
Consider that taking statins may be a leading cause of Alzheimer’s. If you have a loved one or a friend who has Alzheimer’s and if they are taking a statin please discontinue the statin. It is considered safe to stop taking a statin drug but always consult your health care practitioner if you wish.
The mineral selenium may be instrumental in preventing and even reversing Alzheimer’s, cancers, thyroid disease, chemical sensitivity and fibromyalgia. A high quality Omega-3 fish oil or plant source Omega-3 would also be helpful for brain function support.
How effective are statins in reducing death rate? According to a government’s task force statins provided an absolute benefit of .40% for all-cause mortality. That means if 1000 people are taking statins for five years four people might not die. An analysis of 11 studies covering 65,000 patients showed there was no benefit of statins for reducing overall death rate.
A safe alternative to a statin drug are Tocotrienols which are in the vitamin E family. They work in the same place as statins but without all the damage statins cause.
Please ask a Natural Living staff associate for further information if you are interested in selenium, omega-3 or tocotrienols.
