Omega-3 and Mental Health

omega-3Did you know that depression is projected to be the 2nd most common disease by 2020?  Are you surprised that Americans have the lowest intake of omega-3 essential fatty acids of any developed country?  Not good!  With a global deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids research shows mental health may be improved with adequate intake of omega-3.  Antidepressant drugs are known to have side effects so health care professionals are looking for safer alternative therapies and omega-3 containing EPA and DHA along with D3 appears to be a smart choice to support mental health.  Omega-3 is very safe to take and has been shown to also support heart health, proper metabolism of dietary fat and cholesterol, joint health, immunity, hair-skin, pre-natal and infant health, digestive health, and increasing performance, endurance and recovery.

It is important to get an adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids.  Nutritional experts recommend a minimum of 500mg of EPA and DHA daily.  Please be aware that the label may say 1000 mg Omega-3 but that is the weight of the capsule.  Read the label to determine the EPA/DHA potency.  1000mg of EPA/DHA daily provides good support.  3000mg daily is considered a therapeutic dose but keep in mind that 5000mg daily is recommended by the European Food Safety Authority which is our equivalent of the FDA.

To get 1000mg of EPA/DHA you can find this in two capsules of Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega.  It takes 2/3 of a can of sardines, 14 krill capsules, 57 flax oil capsules or a 10oz bag of flax meal or chia seeds to get 1000mg of EPA/DHA!  When choosing fish for omega-3 please choose deep ocean fish, not farm raised fish.  Be cautious eating fresh fish from the Pacific ocean due to radiation levels.
